Radio Universidad de Puerto Rico

A semester of producing news through the airwaves.

About a semester out of grad school, I was recruited as reporter for the University of Puerto Rico’s (UPR) radio station morning news program, “Hoy en las noticias.” During six months, about 40 stories were aired, highlighting issues happening in Río Piedras, home to the main college campus of UPR, where the radio station is also located.

Starting with long-form investigations and switching to daily coverage, one of the most shared stories was the opening of a charter school in Río Piedras, controversial in the community for lack of inclusive participation and sparked a debate around whether this type of education should compete with other schools in the area that are underfunded.
