Where a couple of research proposals became a primary introduction into journalism.

Author Profile

After submitting a climate-related proposal to the independent news outlet Center of Investigative Journalism’s (CPI, in Spanish) training program, called Instituto de Formación Periodística, I received a grant to research air quality issues in Puerto Rico. With the mentorship of their editorial team, the project garnered two publications that exposed inoperative air monitoring devices and troubling ethylene oxide use in the island.

This coverage led to a collaboration with Grist, a media outlet specialized in climate issues, to further delve into why Puerto Rico had the highest recorded emissions of the toxic chemical, according to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) data. The three-part series was a finalist for the 2025 John B. Oakes Award, administered by Columbia Journalism School.

A second proposal, regarding LGBTQ+ issues and discrimination against elders, was also selected by CPI to develop, along with the main daily paper in Puerto Rico, El Nuevo Día. Two pieces were made in a span of two months, one of which consisted in developing a survey, cold calling over 200 facilities and analyzing compiled data that demonstrated a lack of diversity mindset or educational materials in long-term care centers.

The story “Older LGBTQIA+ People ‘Have to Go Back to the Closet to Be Able to Find Housing’” was honored in 2024 with a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Online Journalism Article in Spanish.
